FK Liepāja is a Latvian professional football club based in the city of Liepāja, founded in 2014 as a successor to the dissolved Liepājas Metalurgs. The club’s visual identity was introduced at its first press conference on 18 March 2014, held in the Liepāja City Council hall, where the club logo was officially presented to the public alongside the team roster and captain.[1]
Design and History
The FK Liepāja logo was unveiled on 18 March 2014, the city’s birthday, during the club’s first press conference at the Liepāja City Council.[2] The club was founded on 14 February 2014, following the end of the Liepājas Metalurgs era at the conclusion of the 2013 season.[1]
The club’s official colors are green, red, and white.[3] These colors reflect the city of Liepāja’s own symbolism: the city flag is horizontally divided into a red upper half and a green lower half, with the city’s coat of arms in the center.[4]
The city’s coat of arms, which dates to 1625, depicts a red Courland lion with a split tail supporting a linden tree with its forelegs on a silver background.[4] The linden tree (Latvian: liepa) is a direct reference to the city’s name, Liepāja.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The FK Liepāja crest draws on the heraldic tradition of the city of Liepāja. The club’s identity is rooted in the city’s coat of arms, which features the red Courland lion and the linden tree, symbols that have represented Liepāja since the city received its coat of arms in 1625.[4] The lion signifies the city’s historical connection to the Courland region, while the linden tree serves as a canting symbol for the city’s name.[5]
The club’s green, red, and white color scheme mirrors the city’s official flag, which consists of a red upper half and a green lower half with the coat of arms in the center.[4]
