Lechia Gdańsk is a Polish football club based in Gdańsk, founded in August 1945 as the Port Reconstruction Office Sports Club and renamed Lechia in 1946. From the very beginning, the club adopted white and green as its colors.[1]
Design and History
The Lechia Gdańsk coat of arms has existed in a form similar to the current one since 1946. The club’s official history describes the original version, as noted in national football periodicals, as “a graphic-letter composition with a dominant triangular pennant motif.” This pennant, perched on a spar and pointing to the right, became an iconic representation of the club over time.[1]
Following the club’s revival in 2001, Lechia refurbished its historic coat of arms, closely referencing the postwar original. In 2010, a three-year patent procedure concluded, providing legal protection for the coat of arms and the Lechia Gdańsk name, meaning any use of the crest or name requires club authorization.[1]
Over the years, the crest underwent various modifications, often tied to temporary name changes imposed by authorities of the time, such as Budowlany Klub Sportowy Lechia Gdańsk, FC Lechia, and Lechia-Polonia.[1] On October 24, 2016, the Lechia Gdańsk coat of arms and the “LG” mark were registered as a European trademark.[1]
In February 2025, the club presented a special jubilee crest for its 80th anniversary. According to Michał Perling, Lechia’s Marketing and CSR Manager, the anniversary crest was created in three versions: full-color using the brand palette, two-color, and transparent. The design uses a mirror image of the club’s flag, which Perling noted is both a symbol of the club and one of the most popular attributes of its celebrating fans.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official history describes the triangular pennant motif as the dominant element of the crest since its early postwar version.[1] The 80th anniversary crest’s green color was chosen deliberately to reference the first all-green outfit the team wore after changing its name to Lechia in March 1946.[2]
