Tokushima Vortis is a Japanese professional football club based in Tokushima Prefecture, competing in the J.League. The club’s name derives from the Italian word “VORTICE,” meaning vortex, a reference to the powerful Naruto whirlpools off the coast of Tokushima Prefecture.[1]

Design and History

In September 2023, Tokushima Vortis announced a complete redesign of its club emblem, to be introduced from the 2024 season, which marked the club’s 20th anniversary.[2] The decision to renew the emblem was announced in June 2023, with the club conducting a fan survey to gather supporter opinions on the direction of the new design.[3] The survey, which received 1,314 responses, showed that about 90 percent of respondents favored a renewal, with over half requesting a complete redesign. Fans expressed preferences for a vertical format, a whirlpool motif, and imagery based on the letter “V.”[2]

The new emblem, which replaced a horizontal crest used since the club’s J.League entry, is built around the letter “V” from VORTIS. According to the club, the design incorporates the form of a powerful whirlpool and the flowing arm movements of Awa Odori, the traditional Tokushima dance.[2] The previous emblem, in use from the club’s founding era, was based on Tokushima’s natural scenery, with a whirlpool and logotype expressing the team’s swirling speed and power, and a mountain silhouette reflected on the water’s surface forming a V line.[4]

Alongside the new emblem, the club introduced an original typeface for branding use, described as drawing on the energy of brush strokes and Japonism to express strength and tradition.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The club officially documents the new emblem’s symbolism in detail. The indigo blue color represents “the blessings of the Yoshino River,” while the green represents “the rich nature of Mount Bizan and Tokushima.”[2] The indigo, green, and white lines together number 12, signifying the 11 players on the field united with fans and supporters in pursuit of victory.[2]

The club designated the emblem’s colors as “VORTIS INDIGO BLUE” and “VORTIS GREEN,” establishing them as the club’s official identity colors.[2] The indigo blue references Tokushima’s traditional indigo dyeing, a craft for which the prefecture is historically renowned.[5]

For the club’s 20th anniversary in 2024, a commemorative logo was also created, depicting the number “0” as a whirlpool. Its 24 lines represent the 24 municipalities of Tokushima Prefecture, symbolizing the club’s aim to involve the entire prefecture.[6]

Typography and Design

The 2024 emblem redesign also introduced an original club typeface. According to the club, the typeface uses elements inspired by the momentum of brush strokes and Japonism to express strength and tradition. It was adopted for use across club branding, including player names and numbers on uniforms from the 2024 season.[2]
