FC Goa is an Indian professional football club based in Goa that competes in the Indian Super League (ISL). The club was launched on 26 August 2014, and its official crest was unveiled at the launch event by then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.[1]
Design and History
The FC Goa logo combines Goa’s state animal, the gaur (Indian bison), with a shield. Club officials described the design as symbolic of strength, attack and defence, qualities that epitomise the team.[2] The club’s own description states that the logo “personifies the character of Goan football and the fundamentals of the team.”[3]
The crest was presented at the club’s launch by Dattaraj Salgaonkar, who was then Managing Director of V M Salgaocar and Company and one of the club’s original owners.[4] Salgaonkar delivered the presentation on the logo, reiterating that it personified Goan football and the team’s fundamentals.[5]
No official source documents a subsequent redesign of the club crest. The gaur-and-shield concept described at the 2014 launch remains the basis of the club’s identity as described on its official website.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The gaur was chosen deliberately as Goa’s state animal, creating an immediate connection to local fans. The animal is associated with qualities of strength, attack, defence and resilience.[6] The shield element reinforces the defensive symbolism, while the overall mark was intended to represent the character of Goan football.[1]
The club’s colours are orange and blue. A branding presentation for the club described the palette as representing the combination of the sun and the Goan coastline.[7]
Typography and Design
The crest depicts the face of the gaur within a shield-shaped badge.[6] The club’s nickname, “The Gaurs,” derives directly from the state animal featured in the logo.[8]
