Liberty University’s athletic teams, known as the Flames, use a primary logo built around an eagle head formed from stylized flames, paired with an “LU” monogram. The university’s athletics branding is managed internally by the University Marketing Department, which oversees the official wordmark, primary logo, and monogram.[1]
Design and History
Liberty’s visual identity dates to 1975, when the institution, then Liberty Baptist College, changed its school colors from green and gold to red, white, and blue in support of the founding principles of America.[2] The Flames nickname was adopted in 1972, the same year basketball became the college’s first intercollegiate team.[3]
In 1980, the eagle was designated as the Flames mascot. An eagle was selected for its patriotic symbolism and connection with the school name, Liberty.[4] The eagle mascot, named Sparky, was designed with the Flames nickname in mind, and the original renderings included a flaming torch clutched in the eagle’s talon.[5]
In March 2013, Liberty Athletics refreshed its brand. The university described the update as implementing “a more modern, refined, and refreshed appearance without straying too far from Liberty’s classic look.”[6] The changes included a bolder enhancement to the Flames eagle logo, a new monogram, and refinements to the university wordmarks.[6] The university also trademarked the initials “LU” at that time, having previously discouraged their use because other universities could claim the same initials.[6]
The current athletics primary logo combines the Liberty monogram with the athletics eagle head.[7] The eagle head is formed from blue, white, and grey flames, with the “LU” initials in red with white highlights and blue trim.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The eagle head in the Liberty logo connects directly to the university’s mascot history. The eagle was chosen in 1980 for its patriotic symbolism and its connection to the school’s name, Liberty.[4] The flame elements reference the Flames nickname, which has been used for Liberty’s athletic teams since 1972.[3]
Typography and Design
Liberty’s official school colors are Liberty Red and Liberty Blue, which serve as the primary color palette across communications, merchandise, and branding.[7] Liberty Navy is specified as PMS 282 with HEX #0A254E, while Liberty Red is PMS 187.[9][10] The university’s branded apparel policy requires items to use primary colored base stock in red, navy, or white.[11]
The 2013 brand refresh was developed internally by the University Marketing Department.[12] No external designer or agency has been publicly credited for the current mark.
