Macarthur FC is a professional football club based in south-west Sydney, Australia, competing in the A-League Men competition. The club was officially unveiled on 15 May 2019, when its name, colours and crest were announced at a luncheon in Campbelltown.[1] The club is nicknamed “The Bulls”, a reference to the bull featured prominently in its crest.[1]
Design and History
The Macarthur FC crest was designed by Daniela Dalfonso and Daniela Vicano of Twosome Creative, a South West Sydney creative agency established in 2016.[2] The design process began with community forums and a survey to gather fan input on the club name, colours and logo, with the designers given creative freedom after the club determined the name and colour palette.[2] The logo took four weeks to complete.[2]
The club’s official colours are black, white and ochre, selected through community consultation.[1] The crest features a bull, which references a moment in local history when a runaway herd of cattle was discovered in the region in 1795.[1] The club’s official statement described the bull as “demonstrative of the club’s physical power as well as a tilt to history.”[1]
The crest also includes three stars of the Southern Cross, which symbolise football’s links with the grassroots football community, the National Premier Leagues and the A-League.[1] The club’s inaugural home and away kits, designed by apparel partner Macron, featured the crest in the club’s signature colours of black, white and ochre.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Black and white were chosen as emblematic colours representing the culturally and linguistically diverse people of the Macarthur region, described by the club as “authentically fun, tribal, proud, hard working and inclusive.”[1] Ochre was included to represent one of the traditional colours of the local Dharawal Aboriginal people, on whose land the Macarthur region sits.[1]
The bull in the crest is synonymous with the region, referencing the discovery of a runaway herd of cattle in 1795.[1] The three stars of the Southern Cross represent the connection between grassroots football, the National Premier Leagues and the A-League.[1]
