Kyoto Sanga F.C. is a Japanese professional football club based in Kyoto, competing in the J1 League. The club traces its roots to the Kyoto Shiko Club founded in 1922, and its visual identity has evolved through several name changes, most recently in 2007 when the club adopted its current name and a new emblem.
Design and History
The current Kyoto Sanga F.C. emblem was introduced in 2007, the same year the club changed its name from Kyoto Purple Sanga to Kyoto Sanga F.C. [1] The name change was made with the intention of evolving toward a club that aims for the future together with fans and family through football, dropping the “Purple” from the official name while retaining the purple color scheme. [2]
The club’s official website describes the emblem’s design in detail. The arrowhead-like sharpness represents agile attacking power, while the shield-shaped form symbolizes strong defensive capability. Two phoenixes (鳳 and 凰) face each other, expressing a fighting stance and the absolute strength to stir up storms. The burning red expresses passionate fighting spirit and the hot soul of an immortal phoenix that never gives up. The phoenixes face toward heaven with wings spread wide, aiming for the highest point. To represent the tradition and history dating back to the Shiko (Shiko) club era, a soccer ball used in the 1930s is also placed within the emblem. [2]
The club’s official color is purple, a tradition inherited from the original Shiko club, whose name “Shiko” (紫光) means “brilliant purple.” [3] The 1993 name “Kyoto Purple Sanga” combined this purple heritage with “Sanga,” a Sanskrit word meaning “companions” or “group,” and the resonance of “sanga” with the Japanese word for “mountains and rivers” (山河), evoking the scenic beauty of Kyoto. [2]
A star above the emblem on the left chest of the uniform commemorates the club’s victory in the 82nd Emperor’s Cup in 2002. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The phoenix is the central motif of the Kyoto Sanga identity. The club’s mascot, Pursa-kun, is also based on the phoenix and the immortal bird, wearing red flames that represent burning passion and aggressive action. [2] The phoenix has been a symbol of the club since the Purple Sanga era, as confirmed by the design agency that created the club’s 30th anniversary logo in 2024, which described the phoenix as “the club’s symbol since the Purple Sanga era.” [5]
The club’s official communications frequently reference the emblem’s colors. In announcing new uniforms, the club has described purple as “the club color used in the emblem” and red as “the phoenix’s red,” used as an accent to express powerful flight toward the future. [6]
Typography and Design
The 2007 emblem redesign was part of a broader rebranding effort. At the time, club officials stated they wanted a design that was “innovative and evocative of Kyoto.” [7] The current emblem features the club name in a bold, structured letterform that complements the shield composition, though specific typographic details are not documented in official sources.
In 2024, the design agency SCA-LE created a special 30th anniversary logo for the club. The concept was “a phoenix flying into a new era,” paying homage to the phoenix that had been the club’s symbol since the Purple Sanga era, with the bird’s dynamic flight depicted in the shape of the number “30.” [5]
