Mumbai City Football Club, an Indian Super League club based in Mumbai, adopted a new circular crest on 14 July 2023, ahead of its landmark 10th season. The redesign marked a visual shift from the club’s original shield-style emblem to a round format that aligns it with the circle crests of sister clubs within the City Football Group, including Manchester City, New York City and Melbourne City.[1]
Design and History
Mumbai City FC’s first crest, unveiled at the club’s launch in August 2014, was described by co-owner Ranbir Kapoor as a blue and white design featuring a resilient fortress surrounding the logo, signifying the determined spirit of the city. It also included seven stars symbolising the islands that form Mumbai, and a local train, described as the lifeline of the city.[2] The team’s colours at launch were announced as a combination of blue with red and white.[2]
The 2023 crest draws its inspiration from the club’s first crest and the values of Mumbai it represented, along with the city’s modernity and pioneering spirit.[1] Its design was developed following an elaborate consultation with club fans, who voted on the identity marks and brand elements to be included.[1]
The new crest features a circular outer ring with ‘Mumbai City Football Club’ emblazoned prominently, flanked by two fortresses described as an ode to the club’s first-ever crest.[1] The new PUMA home kit for the 2023-24 season was the first to feature the new crest.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the club’s official press release, fans voted for the inclusion of several key elements that echo the identity of Mumbai and the club:[1]
- The Bandra Worli Sea Link, described as a modern engineering marvel representing the club’s modern outlook and commitment to the people of the city.
- The Mumbai train network, described as the lifeline of the city, which continues to be an important part of the crest.
- The Arabian Sea, which hugs Mumbai’s coastline and forms an invaluable part of the city’s identity.
- Two resilient fortresses, an ode to the club’s first-ever crest, signifying the unrelenting, determined spirit of the city.
Fans also approved the inclusion of the round shape and City sky blue in the new crest, along with the retention of the obsidian blue from the club’s first crest.[1]
