The Motor City Cruise are the NBA G League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, based in Detroit, Michigan. The team’s name and logo were announced together on October 30, 2020, ahead of the franchise’s inaugural 2021-22 season at a new arena on the campus of Wayne State University.[1]
Design and History
The Motor City Cruise identity was introduced when the Detroit Pistons purchased the Northern Arizona Suns franchise from the Phoenix Suns in July 2020 and relocated it to Detroit.[2] The team name was selected through a fan naming contest held in August 2020, with Dylan Martin of Grandville, Michigan, becoming the first of ten individuals to submit the winning name.[1]
The moniker pays homage to Detroit’s automotive history and the region’s “love for the open road.”[1] The logo incorporates the iconic red basketball from the traditional Pistons brand and features firing tailpipes, described as symbolic of classic muscle cars and a nod to the Pistons brand from the early 2000s.[1] The mark was also noted as referencing the Pistons’ “Goin’ To Work” era branding of the early 2000s.[3]
The logo’s structure places the red basketball with white fiery tailpipes at the center, enclosed in a blue circle with the team name around it.[4] The specific designer or agency behind the logo has not been publicly disclosed.
Meaning and Symbolism
The Cruise nickname refers to the history of the automotive industry in Detroit and a driving motif.[4] The firing tailpipes in the logo are symbolic of classic muscle cars, tying the visual identity directly to Detroit’s automotive heritage.[1]
Typography and Design
The logo’s colors, red, white, blue and gray, along with its lettering, align with the Pistons’ current font and color scheme.[1] The use of the Pistons’ traditional colors and typography was a deliberate choice to maintain visual continuity between the parent club and its G League affiliate.[5]
