North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina, retired its Crusaders athletic identity in 2024 after more than two decades of use. The university announced on April 29, 2024, that it would adopt the Trailblazers nickname, with the change taking effect June 15, 2024. The Crusaders name had been in place since 2001, following a series of earlier mascots including the Moonshiners, Black Widow Spiders, Mountaineers, and Lassies. [1] [2]
Design and History
The Crusaders identity was adopted in 2001 after years of debate over the previous Mountaineers nickname, which some felt carried a negative stigma associated with hillbillies and moonshining. [2] The university’s official colors during the Crusaders era were red, black, and white, a palette that traces back to the Black Widow Spiders era in the early 1950s, when the region’s native spider’s distinctive black and red coloring was selected for school athletics. [2]
The decision to replace the Crusaders identity came after a multi-year process led by an athletics department task force that included students, faculty, staff, alumni, and board members. The university hired the collegiate branding consultant Rickabaugh Graphics to assist with identifying and developing the new mascot. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The replacement Trailblazers logo, designed by Rickabaugh Graphics, depicts a red fox and carries documented symbolism tied to the university’s location and history. The shield shape represents the campus’s strength and unity. The top crest of the shield references the local geography of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The red fox is shown focused on the North Star, which symbolizes the university’s long-standing description as “a light on the hill.” [1] [2]
The red fox was selected because it is native to the region and displays qualities associated with trailblazing: clever, resourceful, wise, fast, tenacious, and brave. [1] The mascot name also pays homage to the school’s location near the Tugaloo Trail and the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail in the foothills of Greenville County. [1]
Typography and Design
According to the university’s official mascot history, the Trailblazers wordmark leans to the right, a deliberate design choice representing forward motion and blazing a trail toward the future. [2] The current athletics website identifies the university’s teams as the Trailblazers, and the NCAA directory lists North Greenville’s nickname as Trailblazers with black and red as its colors.
