PSIS Semarang, officially Persatuan Sepakbola Indonesia Semarang, is an Indonesian football club based in Semarang, Central Java, founded on May 18, 1932.[1] The club’s crest is widely recognized by the Tugu Muda monument, a landmark of Semarang, which appears on the badge worn by players and supporters.[2]
Design and History
The club’s visual identity has undergone at least one documented crest change. Historical records indicate a first crest was used until 2006, followed by a new crest introduced in 2007 that remains in use.[3] The current crest incorporates the Tugu Muda monument, a structure that symbolizes the heroism of Semarang residents during the five-day battle against Japanese forces.[4] The monument’s inclusion in the club badge has made it a point of pride for players and fans, with the crest frequently described as “the Tugu Muda on the chest.”[5]
In May 2021, to celebrate the club’s 89th anniversary, PSIS released a special anniversary logo under the hashtag #8ETTERTO9THER. The design combined the numbers 8 and 9 with the Tugu Muda monument, uniting the two digits through the iconic Semarang landmark.[6] The round upper portion of the number 8 was described as symbolizing the sun, though it was not rendered in yellow.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Tugu Muda monument within the PSIS crest carries documented meaning. It reflects the patriotic spirit of Semarang’s citizens during the “Pertempuran Lima Hari” (Five Day Battle) against Japanese forces.[8] The monument is also described as an iconic symbol of Semarang, the club’s home city.[6] Blue, the dominant color of the club’s identity, is described as the club’s official color of greatness.[7]
Typography and Design
Documented descriptions of the crest’s typography and construction are limited. The club’s official website is psis.co.id, where the current crest is displayed.[1] The crest’s placement on match jerseys has been noted in media coverage, with the Tugu Muda emblem positioned on the left chest of the shirt.[2]
