Sagan Tosu is a Japanese professional football club based in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture. The club’s visual identity consists of two distinct elements: an emblem (crest) and a separate wordmark logo, both of which have been renewed at different points in the club’s history. The current emblem dates from 2015, while the current logo was introduced in 2006.
Design and History
The club has used three generations of emblems since its founding in 1997. The first emblem, used from 1997 to 2005, combined the club name’s initials “S” and “T” with a map of Saga Prefecture as the central motif.[1]
In 2006, the club renewed both its logo and emblem, framing the change as a new beginning toward promotion to J1.[1] The second-generation emblem introduced the kachigarasu (magpie), a natural designated protected species living in the Chikugo region of Saga, with the bird’s form drawn using the hidden letters of “sagantosu.”[2] The accompanying logo was designed with a sharper image to convey strength, with V-shaped decorations on both the top and bottom to signify victory.[3]
The current, third-generation emblem was announced on January 15, 2015.[4] According to the club’s official concept statement, the new emblem emphasizes the kachigarasu moving powerfully forward, depicting the bird flying sharply, quickly, and in a straight line, with large wings beating to express the team’s constant forward momentum.[5] The overall shape of the emblem was not drastically changed from the 2006 version, but the magpie silhouette, previously shown in profile, was redrawn facing forward with spread wings. The background of the five-color V lines was also changed from blue to white.[4] The logo itself was not changed in 2015.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The entire emblem is designed in the image of the letter V for Victory.[3] Located in the upper middle is the kachigarasu, a magpie that is a natural designated protected species in the Chikugo region of Saga. The design portrays the bird flapping its wings strongly and advancing forward.[3]
The color scheme uses Sagan Blue and Sagan Pink, with the V rendered in the image colors of the five continents.[3] The club’s official colors are listed as blue and pink by the J.League.[6] The English text “True champions in the hearts of all who love Sagantosu” appears on the emblem, meaning “Become a true champion together with everyone who loves Sagantosu.”[3]
The club name itself carries meaning: “Sagan” combines the local dialect word for “of Saga” with the idea that individual small forces, like grains of sand, can consolidate over many years into strong sandstone (sagan).[6]
Typography and Design
The club’s official site describes the logo as aiming to show strength through a sharper image than previously, with particular attention given to the V-shaped decorations at both the top and bottom of the logo to signify victory.[3] The emblem includes the English phrase “True champions in the hearts of all who love Sagantosu” as part of its composition.[3]
