The Tennessee Titans unveiled a new primary logo, named “The Shield,” on March 12, 2026, marking the franchise’s first logo change since adopting the Titans name in 1999.[1] The redesign was introduced alongside new uniforms and helmets ahead of the 2026 NFL season.[2]
Design and History
The Shield features a redesigned white “T” inside a Titans blue circle, with white and red accents and three white stars representing the state of Tennessee.[2] The new mark removes the flames and sword-like elements of the previous logo, which had been in use since the franchise rebranded from the Oilers to the Titans in 1999.[3] The team’s official history page confirms that the franchise unveiled a new logo in 1999 when it was renamed the Tennessee Titans.[4]
The 1999 mark, sometimes described as a “flaming thumbtack,” featured a beveled, sword-like “T” set within a roundel, with three stars from the Tennessee state flag and navy, light blue, and red flame elements trailing behind.[5] SportsLogos.Net attributes the original design to NFL Properties and Martin Fitzpatrick.[6]
Titans President and CEO Burke Nihill described the 2026 logo as “an evolution of the best of who we’ve always been,” noting that the helmet logo worn for over 25 years was part of the franchise’s identity and that the team wanted to preserve a sense of familiarity.[2] The redesign process stretched across several years and incorporated fan, alumni, and community feedback through surveys and focus groups.[2] Team leadership stated the rebrand was inspired by creating a timeless look for the franchise through 2045 and beyond.[7]
The redesign coincides with organizational changes, including a new coaching staff and the upcoming opening of a new Nissan Stadium.[2] Nihill said the team had been contemplating revamped uniforms and branding to coincide with the new stadium since at earliest 2021.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The three white stars in the logo represent the state of Tennessee, drawing from the Tennessee state flag.[9] The team also places three navy stars on the back neckline of jerseys to represent the three grand divisions of the state.[2]
The new look pays homage to the “Luv Ya Blue” era of the Houston Oilers, incorporating elements from the franchise’s nearly 30-year history in Tennessee.[2] The Titans blue color is described by the team as unique and bold, distinct from the navy used by other NFL teams.[2] Sports Business Journal noted that the new Titans blue is nearly identical to the Oilers’ Columbia Blue, and that the navy palette the Titans had always featured is entirely absent from the new look.[8]
The team also introduced a secondary logo called “The Football,” featuring the letters “T” and “N” fused vertically inside a football-shaped outline, described as a cultural representation of the team’s home and community.[2]
Typography and Design
The team’s brand page describes the primary wordmark as a bold, serif font inspired by Tennessee woodblock type and classic athletics, stitched across the chest of home jerseys.[10] The away jersey renders “TENNESSEE” in a sans-serif typeface.[10] The Woodblock font is described by the team as symbolic of Nashville’s creative spirit, traditional print making, and letterpress printing.[2]
