The Philadelphia 76ers are an NBA franchise originally founded in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals before relocating to Philadelphia in 1963, where the team was renamed the 76ers in celebration of the establishment and independence of the United States of America in 1776.[1] The team’s visual identity has remained remarkably consistent since that move, built around the red and blue “76” numerals and a basketball motif.
Design and History
The franchise’s original identity was established in 1963 and featured a stylized red “7” and blue “6” with 13 blue stars above the “7.”[2] This core design was modified in 1977-78 to include the “ers” suffix and was contained within a basketball.[3]
In the 1997-98 season, the Sixers drastically changed their logo and colors, supplementing their traditional blue and red with black, silver and gold in a stylized “76ers” wordmark.[4] That departure proved temporary. On June 23, 2009, the team officially changed its primary logo and color scheme back to the traditional “76ers basketball” logo and the red, white and blue palette originally established in 1963.[5] The vintage logo had last been used during the 1996-97 season and was worn during the franchise’s championship seasons in 1966-67 and 1982-83.[4]
On May 12, 2015, the team unveiled an updated brand identity. According to the team’s press release, the new primary logo was described as “a modern interpretation of the classic Sixers insignia, stylistically redeveloped to include a patriotic blue border with six white stars and ‘PHILADELPHIA’ adorned across the heading.” The familiar white basketball was visually updated with a positional rotation of the seams.[6] The redesign removed the rectangular red background and blue baseline that had bordered the classic ball design in favor of a blue ring around the ball, with the ball itself rotated roughly 30 degrees to reveal the intersection of the ball’s seams.[7]
The 2015 identity also introduced a partial primary logo that drops the surrounding ring, plus secondary logos including a red and blue “76” surrounded by a ring of 13 stars inside a white circle, and a secondary mark featuring a basketball-playing Benjamin Franklin.[7] The court and logo design work was done in-house by the team, with creative agency Mother providing sketches and mock-ups to guide the process.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The team’s nickname and identity reference 1776, the year of American independence, anchoring the franchise to Philadelphia’s revolutionary heritage.[1] The emblematic ring of 13 stars present in the primary, partial and secondary logos represents the original American Colonies.[6] The six white stars on the blue border of the 2015 primary logo were not given an official explanation in the team’s press release.[7]
