Windstream Communications is an American telecommunications provider headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas. The company was formed in 2006 through the spinoff of Alltel’s landline business and its merger with VALOR Communications, and it has undergone two distinct corporate logo changes since its founding.
Design and History
Windstream’s original name and logo were developed by Lippincott Mercer of New York, which was hired to create the brand identity for the newly formed company. Jeff Gardner, president and CEO of Windstream Communications, announced the name and logo to employees in April 2006 during a Web cast.[1] The company’s advertising agency at launch was The Concept Farm, also based in New York.[2]
In September 2020, after completing its financial restructuring and emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy as a privately held company, Windstream unveiled a new corporate logo, which the company described as marking “the next chapter in the company’s transformative journey.”[3] Industry observers noted that the new logo appeared to adopt the branding of the company’s Kinetic consumer brand for the entire corporation.[4] The rebrand accompanied a reorganization into three business units: Windstream Enterprise, Kinetic by Windstream, and Windstream Wholesale.[5]
In April 2022, Windstream Wholesale, a business unit of Windstream, introduced its own new brand identity featuring a graphical element logo that the company said “symbolizes fluidity in motion.” The rebrand was designed to capitalize on the unit’s “fast and flexible” approach to technology leadership and service delivery.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2022 Windstream Wholesale logo was explicitly described by the company as symbolizing “fluidity in motion,” reflecting the unit’s positioning around speed and flexibility.[6] For the 2020 corporate logo, Windstream’s press release did not provide specific symbolic meaning beyond framing the new mark as representing a new chapter following the company’s financial restructuring.[3]
Windstream’s earlier advertising campaigns used a green 1953 Chevrolet truck as a brand icon, which the company described as representing “the crossroads of classic and high-tech.” The green truck and the tagline “Grow Places” were developed from Windstream’s deep roots in rural communities.[7] This icon was part of the company’s advertising identity rather than its corporate logo.
Typography and Design
The original 2006 mark was developed by Lippincott Mercer,[1] and the 2020 redesign was announced without attribution to a specific design firm.[3] The 2022 Windstream Wholesale logo was likewise announced without a credited designer.[6]
