Yearn Finance, also known as yearn.finance, is a decentralized finance (DeFi) yield aggregator built on the Ethereum blockchain. The protocol, originally created by developer Andre Cronje, allows users to deposit digital assets into automated vaults that seek to maximize yield through lending and trading strategies.[1] The project operates as a DAO (Decentralised Autonomous Organisation), and its visual identity has undergone a significant transformation to reflect its broader mission beyond simple yield aggregation.
Design and History
In August 2022, Yearn announced a comprehensive brand rebrand, changing its logo, colors, fonts, and tagline.[2] The rebrand was accompanied by an explanation that Yearn’s purpose extends beyond yield aggregation, reflecting the larger mission of its DAO.[2]
The new visual identity was created by Simon Griffin, whose studio handled art direction, brand guidelines, motion graphics, product design, and visual identity for the project.[3] Griffin described the goal as “creating order from chaos,” noting that as a headless organization with a healthy respect for creativity, Yearn needed guardrails to channel collective output. The new identity was designed to “speak more about reach than previously about currency,” with a modular, flexible design structure intended to communicate to different audiences, from newcomers to crypto natives.[3]
Prior to the 2022 rebrand, the Yearn logo had been a subject of community discussion. In August 2020, during a governance proposal about site UX, one community member criticized a proposed logo update, saying it “has less soul, it’s just a scaled up pixel font” and noting that it did not match the token icon featuring “arrows, infinity sign.”[4] The same thread referenced that the YFI core branding keywords were “independence, playfulness (money legos), uniqueness, experimental,” and that the logo itself was “specifically inspired by Lego.”[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
Yearn’s official press kit describes the brand as “a centralized asset bank for a decentralized brand,” with the tagline “Take the blue pill and enter the world of yearn.”[6] The blue color has been a consistent element of the brand identity. Brandfetch lists Yearn’s primary brand color as #0657F9, named “Blue Ribbon,” alongside white and a near-black “Cod Gray” (#0D0D0D).[7] An Ethereum website contribution listing Yearn as a suggested dapp also cites the brand color as 1554f2.[8]
Typography and Design
The 2022 rebrand explicitly included changes to the logo, colors, and fonts, though specific typeface details have not been publicly documented in the available sources.[2] The design system created by Simon Griffin’s studio was described as modular and flexible, intended to work across different contexts and audiences.[3] The official press kit, hosted at presskit.yearn.farm, serves as the centralized repository for Yearn’s brand assets.[6]
