AMD Athlon is a brand of x86 processors from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), introduced in 1999 as the successor to the AMD K6 line. The Athlon name has been used across desktop, mobile, and server processor families, with the visual identity evolving through several distinct logo generations tied to product architecture changes.
Design and History
The earliest documented Athlon logo guidelines, published by AMD in 1999, established the “AMD Athlon” logo as a standalone mark with specific rules for minimum empty space and correct usage in advertising and marketing materials. The guidelines required that the logo always be used in its official electronic form provided by AMD.[1]
In early 2003, AMD updated the logos for its entire Athlon product line. The company announced that starting February 10, 2003, new logos would be used for the AMD Athlon XP processor, the AMD Athlon MP processor, and the mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor.[2] The redesign unified the Athlon marks with the visual style of the Opteron processor logo that had been introduced the previous year.[3]
Later in 2003, AMD launched the “AMD64 Logo Program” and refreshed the logos for AMD64, Athlon 64, and Opteron. The new logos were designed to indicate compatibility with the AMD64 architecture and were also applied to third-party motherboards and software supporting the architecture.[4]
In late 2007, reports emerged of new Athlon and Sempron processor logos that followed the style of the K10 Phenom logos, rather than the earlier K8 Athlon 64 marks. The reports noted uncertainty about whether the new logos applied to the entire Athlon and Sempron lines or only to specific K10-based models.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
AMD’s official logo usage guidelines describe the Athlon processor logo as consisting of the AMD corporate logo and the Athlon logotype bound by a unifying elliptical element. This description applies to the Athlon MP logo[6] and the Athlon 64 processor logo.[7] The AMD corporate logo itself is described as consisting of the letters “AMD” and a green arrow-shaped mark.[8]
AMD’s trademark guidelines list “AMD Athlon” as a single trademark term, with a space between “AMD” and “Athlon.”[9] The current AMD trademark list continues to include AMD Athlon as an active trademark.[10]
Typography and Design
AMD’s official guidelines for the Athlon 64 logo specify minimum size and staging requirements, color requirements, and incorrect usage examples. The guidelines mandate that authorized electronic logo artwork provided by AMD must always be used.[11] The AMD64 logo guidelines similarly require use of authorized artwork and note that AMD64 should not replace processor names but rather complement and define those products.[12]
