Furuno Electric Co., Ltd. is a Japanese manufacturer of maritime and industrial electronic products, headquartered in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, Japan.[1] The company’s corporate mark and wordmark together form a visual identity that has been in continuous use for decades, with the current mark introduced in 1961.[2]
Design and History
The current Furuno corporate mark, the company’s third, was created in 1961, the same year the company established its head office factory in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, prompting a renewal of the mark.[2] The first mark was made after the company’s predecessor, Furuno Electric Industries, was founded in Nagasaki in 1948.[2]
The Furuno logo displayed on radar antennas has made an impression of the company on a large number of people.[1] The name “FURUNO” is described by the company as a clear depiction of its name that has been familiar to people inside and outside the company for a long time.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Furuno’s official corporate profile, the corporate mark was designed to represent three motifs:[1]
- The first letter of the company name “F(f)”.
- The directional pattern of the ultrasonic transducer of the company’s original fish finder.
- Two fish with their tailfins intertwined.
Additionally, the intertwined tailfins are designed to form a “Z”, which is the common international symbol for electricity.[1]
A fairly deep blue was selected as the corporate color. It represents the color of the Earth and expresses an image of the business field across the entire world.[1]
