Renesas Electronics Corporation is a Japanese semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, formed on April 1, 2010, through the merger of NEC Electronics Corporation and Renesas Technology Corp.[1] The company’s current logo is a typographic wordmark in blue, a color choice that was explicitly selected to signal the new company’s global ambitions.
Design and History
The Renesas logo has undergone one significant documented color change tied directly to the company’s corporate history. The original Renesas Technology Corp., established in 2003 from the merger of Hitachi’s and Mitsubishi’s semiconductor divisions, used a red logo.[2] When NEC Electronics merged with Renesas Technology in 2010 to form Renesas Electronics, the logo’s color changed from red to blue.[2]
According to a report on the merger contract signing in December 2009, NEC Electronics president Junshi Yamaguchi explained that the blue logo was chosen to express the new company’s intention to become a global enterprise.[3] The new logo retained the same shape as the previous Renesas Technology mark, with the color change from red to blue being the primary visual update.[4] The wordmark below the logo was also updated to read “Renesas Electronics Corporation.”[5]
Renesas and the Renesas logo are registered trademarks of Renesas Electronics Corporation.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The documented symbolism of the Renesas logo is tied to its 2010 color change. The shift from red to blue was explicitly intended to communicate the company’s global orientation following the NEC Electronics merger.[3] Beyond this documented rationale, no official explanation of additional symbolic meaning in the logo’s shape or letterforms has been published by the company.
