Adult Swim, stylized as [adult swim], is the adult-oriented nighttime programming block on Cartoon Network that launched on September 2, 2001. The block is programmed by Williams Street, Cartoon Network’s in-house production studio, and airs original and acquired animated and live-action series for young adults. Adult Swim is a WarnerMedia network seen in 94 million U.S. homes. [1]
Design and History
The current Adult Swim logo, in use since May 25, 2003, consists of the words “adult swim” in lowercase letters enclosed in square brackets. The wordmark is set in Neue Helvetica Heavy Condensed type. [2] [3]The original Adult Swim logo, used from 2001 to 2002, featured the name in uppercase letters in a sans serif typeface, rendered in red. Between 2002 and 2003, the logo was modified: the red color was replaced with black, and the lettering changed from uppercase to lowercase. The current version, introduced in 2003, added the square brackets around the inscription. [4]The 2003 redesign coincided with the debut of new on-air “bumps” featuring black intertitle cards with white Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold type. [5]Meaning and Symbolism
The square brackets in the Adult Swim logo have been interpreted as a reference to the block’s limited segment of viewers, adults only. [6]Typography and Design
The current Adult Swim wordmark is set in Neue Helvetica Heavy Condensed, a neo-grotesque sans serif typeface originally designed by Max Miedinger with input from Eduard Hoffmann in 1957.
