Aniplex Inc. is a Japanese entertainment company focused on the planning and production of anime-related intellectual property, video games, theatrical films, and merchandise. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. [1]
Design and History
The company was established in September 1995 and, after becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan in January 2001, adopted the name SME Visual Works. It rebranded as Aniplex on April 1, 2003, a name derived from the concept of “a complex of rights business derived from animation.” [2] The current logo has been in use since 2003, coinciding with this rebranding. [3]
The official SVG version of the logo is hosted on Aniplex’s own website, confirming the mark’s current form. [4] The logo consists of the wordmark “ANIPLEX” rendered in a clean sans-serif typeface, accompanied by an abstract, flowing ribbon-like form above it. The ribbon transitions through a gradient spectrum of colors, including blue, purple, pink, and red. [5]
Notably, the Aniplex logo differs significantly from the corporate name logo designs commonly used across other Sony Music Group companies. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The name “Aniplex” is a portmanteau combining “Animation” and “Complex,” reflecting the company’s multifaceted business model built around animation-derived rights. [2] The abstract ribbon form avoids literal anime imagery, allowing the mark to represent the company’s diverse portfolio across genres and media without favoring any particular series or style.
Typography and Design
The Aniplex wordmark uses a straightforward sans-serif typeface with even stroke weights and generous letter spacing. The typographic treatment remains neutral and professional, grounding the more expressive gradient ribbon symbol above it. The Japanese katakana version of the company name maintains similar proportions and spacing for consistency across language contexts.
