Nick Jr. is the preschool brand of Nickelodeon, operating both as a programming block on the main Nickelodeon channel and as a dedicated 24-hour cable channel. The visual identity of Nick Jr. has evolved through several distinct phases, most recently anchored to the refreshed “Splat” logo system that Nickelodeon introduced in 2023.
Design and History
Nick Jr. originated as a Nickelodeon programming block in 1988. On September 28, 2009, Nickelodeon officially renamed its toddler-targeted Noggin network as Nick Jr., establishing the preschool brand as a standalone channel. The on-air logos changed for both networks as part of this rebranding effort, though programming lineups remained intact.[1]
The 2009 logo introduced a wordmark that has remained in continuous use since September 28, 2009. The main variant features a white “Nick” and blue “Jr.” wordmark paired with a fully orange splat, with a separate variant designed for use on white backgrounds.[2] This design replaced the long-running “splat” motif with a streamlined, balloon-like font treatment.[3]
In 2023, Nickelodeon partnered with Los Angeles-based branding and design agency Roger for its first identity redesign in 14 years. The cornerstone of the new brand identity was an update to the iconic “Splat” logo, unveiled during the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2023. Roger was also responsible for redesigning the Nick Jr. channel’s logo lockup, graphics, and animated idents, which launched in September 2023.[4]
The Nick Jr. rebrand package featured a playroom theme with a neon-toned palette, Nickelodeon’s recognizable orange splat at its center, and hints of the network’s signature green slime around the edges. New assets rolled out across digital and linear platforms in early July 2023, with the full Nick Jr. channel rebrand following in September.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The orange splat at the center of the Nick Jr. identity directly connects the preschool brand to its parent network, Nickelodeon. The 2023 rebrand was conceived to unify the Nickelodeon brand across on-air, digital, and social platforms, with the splat serving as the central unifying element.[6] The playroom theme and vibrant palette were designed specifically for the preschool audience, incorporating Nickelodeon’s signature green slime as a secondary brand cue.[5]
Typography and Design
For the 2023 Nickelodeon rebrand, Roger chose ROC Grotesk for its subtle irregularity and paired it with Neue Plak, which created contrast with its more condensed style. The extensive style options within both font families were intended to give the brand a wide range of opportunities for evolution in the future.[4] Roger designed the new Splat using a circular grid system, which allowed for a secondary set of splash shapes built on the same grid to complement the hero mark with natural cohesiveness.[6]
Roger founder and executive creative director Terry Lee and creative director Braden Wheeler led the design of the new brand system for Nickelodeon.[7]
