Ortho Clinical Diagnostics was a global in vitro diagnostics (IVD) company serving hospitals, clinical laboratories and blood banks for more than 80 years before merging with Quidel Corporation in 2022 to form QuidelOrtho. [1] Its visual identity evolved through several ownership phases, from a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary to an independent Carlyle Group company and eventually a publicly traded firm on Nasdaq.
Design and History
Ortho Clinical Diagnostics traces its corporate identity to Ortho Diagnostic Systems, which filed a trademark for the “Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics & Caduceus” mark in 2002. [2] An earlier US trademark registration from 1999 for “ORTHO-CLINICAL DIAGNOSTICS” also included a caduceus symbol, the serpent-and-staff medical emblem. [3]
In 2014, The Carlyle Group completed its acquisition of Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics from Johnson & Johnson for approximately $4 billion, returning the business to independent operation. [4] Following this transition, the company pursued a brand evolution. The Bain Group documented its work re-engineering the Ortho brand, describing the challenge of organizing “layered chaos of years of one-off brand solutions.” The rebrand combined existing brand equity with new fonts, revamped colors and purposeful graphical brand elements, anchored by the messaging platform “Because Every Test is a Life™.” [5]
Ortho Clinical Diagnostics later filed a new trademark for the word mark “ORTHO CLINICAL DIAGNOSTICS” in July 2016, registered in April 2017. [6] The company went public on Nasdaq in January 2021 under the ticker OCDX. [7]
In May 2022, Quidel Corporation and Ortho Clinical Diagnostics completed their business combination, creating QuidelOrtho Corporation. [8] The Ortho Clinical Diagnostics brand was subsequently retired in favor of the new QuidelOrtho identity.
Meaning and Symbolism
Ortho’s pre-2014 identity under Johnson & Johnson used the caduceus, a traditional medical symbol featuring a serpent entwined around a staff. [3] The company’s later brand evolution under Carlyle ownership emphasized patient-focused messaging rather than symbolic imagery. The Bain Group noted that the rebrand prioritized “consumer-styled imagery that remained B2B2C patient-focused, yet not product-focused,” positioning Ortho as an organization driven to do what is best for patients. [5]
Corporate office design for Ortho Clinical Diagnostics used red as the company’s principal color, complemented by blue tones and geometric motifs. [9]
Typography and Design
The Bain Group’s rebrand work for Ortho Clinical Diagnostics introduced new fonts and revamped colors as part of a strategic visual and messaging framework developed in collaboration with Ortho’s internal brand and communications team. [5] Specific typeface names and exact color specifications were not publicly documented.
After the QuidelOrtho merger, Siegel+Gale designed a new brand identity for the combined company. The QuidelOrtho logo mark uses stylized versions of the letters Q and O, constructed from rounded squares described as “both mathematical and organic,” with a customized variable font delivering 16 typographic styles. [10] This identity replaced the Ortho Clinical Diagnostics brand entirely.
