FS1 is the flagship national sports cable network of Fox Sports, launched on August 17, 2013, as a direct competitor to ESPN.[1] The channel’s visual identity has gone through two distinct phases: an initial mark derived from the parent Fox Sports logo, followed by a standalone “FS1” signature introduced in 2015.
Design and History
When Fox Sports 1 was announced in March 2013, the network’s logo was presented as a modification of the existing Fox Sports oval. The parent Fox Sports logo featured blue, blade-shaped accents on the left and right sides of an oval. For the Fox Sports 1 network logo, an additional blade shape was added to the outside lower left of the oval, with the number “1” placed slightly off center in a generic typeface.[1]
For the network’s on-air launch identity, Fox Sports 1 partnered with entertainment branding agency loyalkaspar, which developed a playful visual identity, brand design and on-air graphics package.[2] Anna Minkkinen, creative director at loyalkaspar, said the team deliberately avoided the dark, gritty tone common in sports graphics and instead embraced a “west coast personality” that was bright, open and fun. The agency developed a reversible blue-on-white and white-on-blue color palette that mimicked the concept of “home” and “away” jerseys, with a pop of gold accenting the palette.[3]
In September 2015, roughly two years after launch, Fox Sports began phasing in a new “FS1” logo in place of the original Fox Sports 1 oval stamp. The change appeared across the network’s college football coverage, on-air graphics, and social media accounts. A Fox Sports spokesman said the change did not signify a rebranding of the network, but rather “a logo change to better align with what the fans and media naturally call the channel, FS1.” The spokesman added that the new logo was intended to help fans differentiate FS1 as a channel destination in markets where multiple “FOX Sports” channels existed. The FOX Sports 1 oval remained in limited use after the transition week.[4]
Typography and Design
For the 2013 launch identity, loyalkaspar used UScore, a family of custom fonts developed for Fox Sports, to maintain consistency with the overarching Fox Sports brand. The slanted bars that anchored the typography echoed the oblique form of the “1” and underlined the boldness of the network’s attitude.[2] The typography was described as bold and brash, mimicking the attitude the network aimed for on air.[3]
Beyond the logo itself, loyalkaspar’s identity package for Fox Sports 1 included a “cascade” feature that drew inspiration from stadium waves, using a series of cascading walls to reveal titles, photos and information. This design connected the network look of Fox Sports 1 to the style of its flagship show, Fox Sports Live.[3]
