Fusion TV was an American English-language cable news and lifestyle network launched in 2013 as a joint venture between ABC News and Univision Communications. The channel targeted U.S. Hispanic millennials with programming covering news, entertainment, pop culture and politics. Univision shut the network down on December 31, 2021, as the company refocused on Spanish-language audiences ahead of its merger with Televisa.[1]

Design and History

Fusion revealed its first logo on May 7, 2013, several months before the channel’s launch. The mark was developed by Los Angeles-based design firm Buster in collaboration with Lubin Lawrence and Fusion’s internal creative team.[2] Brand New, a design industry publication, credited the logo specifically to Caspar Nonner through Buster.[3]

The original identity featured the word “Fusion” in stylized type beneath an abstract icon described by NewscastStudio as what appeared to be the letter “F” inside a rounded rectangle that had been twisted and morphed into an irregular shape.[4] At the time of the reveal, Fusion’s interim president Beau Ferrari said the logo was “a powerful representation of Fusion’s identity,” adding that the brand would “reflect the attitude of millennials, shaped by a sense of unity with a voice that’s fun, fresh and even irreverent.”[2]

In January 2018, Fusion refreshed its brand ahead of a carriage expansion deal with Spectrum. The company replaced what it described as the “guitar pick-shaped icon” with a new symbol its designers called the “F-Bolt,” which would serve as the network bug and across digital and social platforms.[5] The rebrand debuted on January 25, 2018.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

Purple served as Fusion’s primary brand color throughout its run. When the 2018 refresh introduced the F-Bolt, the company stated that while the network’s color palette would utilize a range of colors, purple would continue as the primary brand color, described as “a nod to the independent mindset of our audience.”[5]

Typography and Design

Fusion’s creative director Michael Berkman described the original 2013 shape as “bold, evolving and engaging,” calling it “an iconic stamp that will be instantly recognizable.”[2] Beyond this official description, no documented details about the wordmark’s typeface or construction have been publicly released by the network or its design firms.
