Jiangsu FC was a Chinese professional football club based in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, that competed in the Chinese Super League until it ceased operations in February 2021. The club’s visual identity went through several distinct phases tied to ownership changes, most notably the 2016 rebrand under Suning and a final adjustment in 2021 when the club adopted a neutral name.
Design and History
In January 2016, after Jiangsu Sainty was renamed Jiangsu Suning, the club unveiled a completely new crest. The design featured a lion, a ginkgo leaf, and a shield. The club’s official explanation stated that the crest’s main colors were the traditional blue and yellow of Jiangsu football, with the lion and championship badge drawn in simple lines, while the shield frame represented the team’s determination and bravery. The overall shape of the crest resembled a ginkgo leaf, a plant representative of Jiangsu that also symbolizes longevity, reflecting Suning’s ambition to build a century-old club.[1][2]
The 2016 crest placed the “SUNING” lettering prominently at the top, with the lion motif below. The club acknowledged that the design process was rushed, taking about a month from discussion to production due to the ownership transition and coordination with kit sponsor Nike.[3]
In early 2017, the club introduced a revised version of the crest. The color scheme changed from blue, yellow, and white to blue and yellow only, and the design was described as having a more modern feel. The new crest used dark blue and dark yellow as base colors, with the lion rendered in outline form, while retaining the full English club name.[4][5]
For AFC Champions League matches, where commercial branding was restricted, the club used a variant of the crest with “JIANGSU” replacing “SUNING.”[4]
On February 1, 2021, following Chinese Football Association rules requiring neutral club names, Jiangsu Suning officially became Jiangsu Football Club. The crest was adjusted accordingly: “SUNING” at the top was replaced with “JIANGSU,” the English text at the bottom of the shield was removed, and a yellow star was added above the crest to mark the club’s 2020 Chinese Super League championship.[6][7] The club ceased operations on February 28, 2021, due to financial reasons.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official interpretation of the 2016 crest identified several symbolic elements. The shield frame represented the team’s determination and bravery. The lion, described as the king of beasts, was paired with a championship badge motif. The crest’s overall silhouette formed a ginkgo leaf, a plant native to Jiangsu that also carries connotations of longevity, expressing the club owner’s ambition to build a lasting institution.[1][2]
The yellow star added in 2021 followed the international football convention of marking championship titles on a club crest, signifying the club’s first Chinese Super League title won in the 2020 season.[6]
