Sporting Kansas City, the Major League Soccer club based in the Kansas City metropolitan area, adopted its current visual identity on November 17, 2010, when the franchise officially rebranded from the Kansas City Wizards during a fan rally in the Kansas City Power & Light District.[1] The rebrand coincided with the club’s move into a new soccer-specific stadium the following summer and was intended to reposition the club as a “modern sports club” with deeper ties to the city and the sport.[2]
Design and History
The Sporting KC crest was designed by Lisi Design, a Kansas City-based studio, in collaboration with the team and Adidas.[3] The shield shape is a deliberate nod to the club’s previous Wizards-era mark.[3] Within the crest, 11 stripes, including negative space, represent the 11 players on the field, and the right edge of the stripes forms a divider that mimics the state border between Kansas and Missouri.[3]
MLS’s official announcement at the time described the crest as incorporating the upside-down teardrop shape of the original Wiz shield, with the 11 stripes representing the players and the right edge of the lines forming the angled shape of the Missouri-Kansas state line.[4] The crest’s designers drew inspiration from Greek mythology and art, including the rod of the Greek god Asclepius and the statue Winged Victory, as well as from Spanish architecture, a prominent feature of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza district.[4]
The club’s in-house creative team, led by Creative Director Chad Reynolds, collaborated with agencies and Adidas on the rebrand.[5] The “Sporting” name was chosen to represent the organization’s vision of integrating additional sports and entertainment properties, according to a statement from club president Robb Heineman at the unveiling.[4]
The state-line element introduced in the 2010 crest has remained a recurring motif in the club’s branding, appearing in later jersey designs including the “Stateline” kits.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest’s central divider represents the shared border of Kansas and Missouri, reflecting the club’s bi-state fan base and its stadium location in Kansas City, Kansas.[3] The 11 stripes, including the negative space between them, symbolize the 11 players on a soccer field.[3] The interlocking “SC” monogram stands for Sporting Club, and its design was inspired by the rod of Asclepius, the Greek god of health and medicine.[4]
Typography and Design
The Sporting KC logotype features lettering distinctive enough that Lisi Design expanded it into a custom typeface used exclusively by the organization, applied across merchandise, stadium wayfinding and broadcast graphics.[3] The club’s official colors are “sporting blue” and “dark indigo,” with “lead” as a tertiary color.[7]
