Rotherham United Football Club, nicknamed “The Millers,” is a professional football club based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The club’s visual identity centers on a red shield crest featuring a windmill, a design that directly references the town’s historic flour milling industry and the club’s nickname.
Design and History
The club began sporting a badge in the early 1950s, initially using the borough coat of arms, a common practice among clubs at the time. In the 1970s, the club adopted a crest featuring its initials in a decorative font, following a fashionable trend of the era. The 1980s saw the first nod to the club’s ground, Millmoor, with badges displaying the date 1884, though this date was later removed.
The present badge has been in use since 2005, although in its original form it carried the name “Rotherham United FC” above and below the central design. The badge is composed of a red shield with the club’s other colours of black and white. It is a representation of the town’s flour mills and a windmill that once stood close to the Millmoor ground. The windmill design incorporates the club’s initials in its sails and features an old-style panelled football at its base. The badge still retains a nod to the old ground of Millmoor.[1]
In 2005, the club considered dropping the windmill from its crest as part of a change of image under new ownership. The windmill, which appeared on club shirts at the time, celebrated Rotherham’s once-thriving flour mill industry.[2] The windmill was ultimately retained and remains a defining feature of the club’s identity.
The club’s official website and kit announcements consistently refer to the “Millers’ windmill crest,” confirming its continued presence on matchday shirts.[3] In 2020, the home kit featured a sublimated graphic with “The Millers” repeated to form the windmill sails of the crest, further embedding the windmill motif into the club’s visual language.[4]
For the 2025-26 centenary season, the club’s kits featured commemorative gold elements, including the club’s anniversary crest.[5] The following season marked a return to the traditional red and white windmill crest following the Centenary celebrations.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The windmill crest is a direct representation of the town’s flour mills and a windmill which once stood close to the Millmoor ground.[1] The nickname “The Millers” derives from this milling heritage, and the windmill emblem serves as the visual embodiment of that identity. The club’s traditional colours are red and white, which are reflected in the crest and kit.[7]
