RSC Anderlecht, officially the Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht, is a Belgian football club based in Brussels. Its visual identity is built around the club’s traditional purple and white colors, which date to the club’s founding era and are reflected in its nickname “Paars-Wit” (Purple-White). The club’s current crest is a heraldic shield that has evolved through several refinements since its introduction in 1981.
Design and History
Following the club’s receipt of the Royal designation in 1933, RSC Anderlecht introduced its first official crest. Rather than a traditional shield, the emblem consisted of two interlocking purple-and-gold rings surrounding the initials SCA, referring to the club’s original name, Sporting Club Anderlechtois. A royal crown above the rings reflected the club’s new status.[1]
In 1981, Anderlecht unveiled a completely redesigned crest. The interlocking rings were replaced by a heraldic shield incorporating the club’s purple-and-white colors, the SCA monogram, Belgian flags, the royal crown and the Latin motto “Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” (“A healthy mind in a healthy body”). Laurel branches surrounding the shield symbolized sporting achievement, while the inclusion of the city coat of arms reinforced the club’s connection with Anderlecht.[1]
Further refinements followed in 1989, when the shield received softer contours and updated proportions, and again in 2001, when the crest was redrawn with sharper lines for improved consistency and legibility. Each version preserved the key elements of the 1981 design.[1]
In 2010, Anderlecht added three gold stars above the royal crown to celebrate the club’s achievement of 30 Belgian league championships, in accordance with the Belgian tradition of awarding one star for every ten league titles.[1]
In 2023, the club introduced a refined version of its historic crest. The redesign unified the badge’s gold elements into a single metallic tone, simplified several graphic details and modernised the typography. Notably, the blue and yellow colors of the Anderlecht municipality were removed, and two shades of mauve were introduced.[2] The updated crest deliberately preserved every defining feature of the traditional emblem, including the royal crown, Belgian flags, SCA monogram, Latin motto, city coat of arms and three championship stars.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest contains several documented symbolic elements. The letters SCA refer to the club’s original name, Sporting Club Anderlechtois.[1] The royal crown reflects the Royal designation granted to the club in 1933.[1] The three stars above the crest each represent ten Belgian league championships.[1] The Latin motto “Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” is inscribed on the badge, and two Belgian flags flank the upper portion of the shield.[3]
Typography and Design
In 2022, RSC Anderlecht engaged the branding agency Base Design to develop a new visual identity system. The historic crest was complemented with a series of graphic items, including an RSCA wordmark, the crown, the three stars, a renewed purple, black, white and gold color palette, and a bespoke new typeface described as acting as the visual voice of the club.[4] The new typeface, including its numerals, was designed with a classic approach and a cursive dynamic alternate, distinguishing it from type typically used by football clubs.[5]
The club’s official baseline, “Noblesse Oblige,” was introduced in July 2024 as part of the ongoing evolution of the club’s identity.[6]
