Urawa Red Diamonds, the J1 League club based in Saitama City, Japan, has used two distinct club emblems since its founding in 1992. The current shield-style crest, introduced in February 2001, replaced the original rhombus mark and remains in use today alongside a separate club logotype introduced in 2018.[1]
Design and History
The club’s first emblem, used from its founding in 1992 until January 2001, was a vertical rhombus containing the upper half of a soccer ball and the text “MITSUBISHI URAWA FC.”[1] This early mark reflected the club’s corporate origins as Mitsubishi Urawa Football Club, a name it carried from April 1992 until January 1996.[1]
In February 2001, following the club’s promotion back to J1, the emblem was redesigned to express a stronger regional identity. According to the J.League’s official column, the change was made to emphasize that Urawa Reds was “a regional club,” removing the MITSUBISHI lettering and incorporating local symbols.[2] The new crest features a European-style shield, described by the club as showing the team’s fighting stance.[1]
In January 2018, the club announced a separate club logotype redesign, its first since the club’s establishment. The new logotype, which spells out “URAWA REDS,” was created to embody values and behavioral standards discussed internally during the club’s 25th anniversary year.[3] The design was handled by Nippon Design Center, the advertising and design firm founded in 1959 known for work on the 1964 Tokyo Olympics posters, NHK, and Toyota logos.[4][5] The club used both the old and new logotypes during the 2018 season, with full transition planned for the 2019 season.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2001 shield emblem combines three documented motifs. The primrose (sakuraso) is the flower of Saitama Prefecture and Saitama City, and its only natural habitat in Japan is a national natural monument.[1] Hoshokaku, a former Saitama Normal School building where soccer originated in the region, represents the town’s long history with the sport.[1] The rhombus references the club’s “Red Diamonds” nickname, signifying a team with strong solidarity.[1]
The central motif of the emblem depicts people gathering around a single ball, expressing the club’s philosophy that a ball creates conversation, joy, and friendship that connects to the world.[1]
The 2018 logotype carries a different concept: “Evolution never stops.” Triangles placed within every alphabet letter represent “people,” “town,” and “soccer,” which together form the club. The triangles also depict supporter flags streaming backward as they advance against headwinds, symbolizing the club’s determination to keep moving forward.[3][4]
Typography and Design
The 2018 logotype spells out “URAWA REDS” in capital letters, replacing the earlier “Red Diamonds” wordmark that had been used since the club’s founding. Prior to the redesign, multiple unofficial logotypes using “URAWA REDS” lettering had been used on merchandise and posters alongside the registered club logo.[4] The new design was intended to be immediately recognizable as Urawa Reds while incorporating the club’s philosophy and behavioral standards.[6]
