KPN (Koninklijke KPN N.V.) is the largest telecommunications company in the Netherlands, offering fixed and mobile telephony, internet and television services. The company traces its roots to the former state-owned PTT, which was founded in 1881, and adopted the KPN name after privatization in the late 1980s. The current logo, introduced in 2020 alongside a broader rebranding and new website, centers on a crown symbol surrounded by three rounded abstract shapes, paired with a lowercase wordmark in a custom sans-serif typeface.
Design and History
The current KPN logo was presented in 2020 as part of a rebranding effort that also included a new website. The mark consists of a crown, which references the “Koninklijke” (Royal) designation in the company’s full name, surrounded by three abstract rounded forms. These shapes, sometimes called “tikkels,” represent television, telephony and internet, the three core services offered by KPN. The wordmark uses lowercase letters in a modern sans-serif typeface that was custom-designed for the company under the name KPN Sans. The brand’s primary color is a bright green combined with white.[1]
KPN’s previous logo, introduced in March 2006, was designed by the Rotterdam-based agency Studio Dumbar after winning a competition among four Dutch design firms. That mark featured three colored planes, described by attendees at the launch as pebbles or balloons, topped with a small crown. The 2006 rebranding accompanied a new positioning and the pay-off “KPN sluit je aan” (KPN connects you), reflecting the company’s shift from a traditional telephone operator to a multimedia and services company.[2]
The crown element has been a recurring feature in KPN’s visual identity across multiple logo generations. Earlier versions of the mark placed the crown above or within a square emblem, and the 2006 design retained the crown as a nod to the company’s royal status.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crown in the KPN logo directly references the “Koninklijke” (Royal) title granted to the company, a distinction carried in its official name Koninklijke KPN N.V.[1] The three rounded abstract shapes surrounding the crown symbolize the company’s three main service pillars: television, telephony and internet.[1] The 2006 predecessor logo used three colored planes in a similar arrangement, which observers at the time linked to the “triple play” concept of bundling these three services.[4]
Typography and Design
The KPN wordmark is set in a custom typeface called KPN Sans, designed specifically for the company. The lowercase lettering is described as a modern sans-serif that supports the brand identity without competing with the graphic crown-and-shapes symbol.[1]
