Orchid (OXT) is a decentralized virtual private network (VPN) protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain. Launched in December 2019, it uses the OXT token to let users purchase bandwidth from a global pool of independent node operators, creating an incentivized, peer-to-peer privacy network rather than a centralized VPN service.[1]
Design and History
The Orchid brand identity was developed by the global design consultancy frog, part of Capgemini Invent, in March 2019.[2] The project began in 2017 when a group of privacy advocates and blockchain experts, including Steven Waterhouse and Jay Freeman, set out to create a new kind of VPN solution.[1]
The name “Orchid” was chosen to reflect the network’s complex and beautiful structure, drawing a parallel to orchids in nature.[1] The brand mark itself is a circular formation that takes inspiration from the emergent, self-organizing behavior found in nature. It illustrates a harmonious system where individual “nodes” join the platform to help others access the open internet.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo resembles an orchid petal, symbolizing privacy and freedom.[1] The circular arrangement of nodes in the brand mark represents the peer-to-peer structure of the network, where independent operators contribute bandwidth to create a decentralized system of mutual exchange.[2]
Typography and Design
The Orchid identity is built around a single official brand color: a purple tone recorded as #5F45BA in HEX, rgb(95, 69, 186) in RGB, and cmyk(74%, 80%, 0%, 0%) in CMYK.[3] The brand color is also documented by Brandfetch as “Royal Purple” with the HEX value #563BAA.[4]
