Capitanes de Ciudad de México, also known as Mexico City Capitanes, is a professional basketball team based in Mexico City. Founded in 2016, the club began play in Mexico’s Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) before joining the NBA G League, where it became the first franchise based in Mexico to compete in a U.S. professional league. The team’s visual identity has centered on iconic Mexico City landmarks, evolving from the Monumento a la Revolución to the Palacio de Bellas Artes, with a retro-inspired graphic line introduced for the 2025-26 season.
Design and History
When the franchise was unveiled in October 2016, its official logo was inspired by the Monumento a la Revolución, a landmark monument in Mexico City. Team representatives described the monument as a “faithful representation of the bravery and leadership that Los Capitanes share with the revolutionary heroes who gave life to this nation.” The logo was presented at the Plaza de la República, where the monument stands. [1] [2]
Following the team’s move to the NBA G League, the primary logo was updated to depict the Palacio de Bellas Artes in blue and gold, with a basketball serving as the building’s dome. The team name “Capitanes” appears below in white, with “Ciudad de México” beneath it on a blue background. [3] The team’s home and away jerseys for its first G League season in 2021-22 retained the blue, white and yellow color scheme used during its LNBP years. [4]
In August 2025, Capitanes presented a new graphic identity for the 2025-26 season, described as a return to the club’s roots. The new line, inspired by a retro style, introduced geometric figures as the base of the visual structure and an arcade-style texture drawn from retro video games and 1980s digital signage. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The original 2016 logo’s use of the Monumento a la Revolución was tied to the values of bravery and leadership associated with the Mexican Revolution, which the team sought to embody. [1] The later Palacio de Bellas Artes design continued the pattern of featuring a recognizable Mexico City architectural landmark as the centerpiece of the crest. [3]
For the 2025-26 rebrand, the club assigned specific meanings to its primary colors: Rosa Mexicano represents pride and cultural heritage, white represents purity and clarity, and Azul Capitanes represents strength and identity. The geometric figures in the new system represent order within dynamism, reflecting how the team is built with and for its community. [5]
Typography and Design
The 2025-26 graphic identity introduced four new typefaces intended to emphasize the retro aesthetic while maintaining clarity in communication. [6] The arcade-style texture added to the system was described by the team as a nod to a generation shaped by basketball courts and retro digital culture. [5]
