The Football Association of Finland, known in Finnish as Suomen Palloliitto (SPL), is the governing body for football and futsal in Finland. Founded in 1907, it joined FIFA in 1908 and UEFA in 1954.[1] The association’s visual identity has undergone at least one significant documented change in the 21st century, with its current mark used across all organizational communications.
Design and History
On January 1, 2009, the Football Association of Finland introduced a new corporate logo. According to a contemporary announcement, the previous “lehvälogo” (leaf logo) remained part of the renewed visual identity, but the association adopted the new logo for all contexts related to its operations from the start of that year.[2] The new logo was produced in Finnish, Swedish, and English language versions.[2]
The association’s flag is blue and displays its logo.[3] The current logo also appears on national team kits; when the men’s and women’s national team shirts were redesigned in 2020, the jersey was described as featuring a “kultareunuksinen Suomi-logo” (gold-bordered Finland logo).[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2020 national team shirt design was explicitly tied to the Finnish flag, with a symbolic cross running lengthwise and crosswise on a white background in different shades of blue.[4] The shirt also carried the word “Sisu” printed in blue and white inside the collar, which the association said reflected the never-give-up attitude of the national teams and all of Finland.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2009 change was announced without attribution to a specific designer or studio.[2]
