Grin (GRIN) is a privacy-preserving digital currency built on the Mimblewimble blockchain protocol, developed openly by a distributed community of developers with no controlling company, foundation, or individual.[1] The project’s visual identity centers on a distinctive smiley face logo that has become closely associated with the cryptocurrency since its mainnet launch in January 2019.[2]
Design and History
The Grin logo is a yellow smiley face with an “M” and a “W” in place of the eyes, rendered in black and yellow.[3] The M and W stand for Mimble and Wimble, respectively, referencing the Mimblewimble protocol that Grin implements.[3] The protocol itself is named after a tongue-tying spell from the Harry Potter series, a reference that extends into the project’s naming and visual culture.[4]
The logo was designed by community member 0xb100d, who confirmed authorship in a forum discussion about the brand.[5] The design emerged from an open community thread titled “Grin Logos for Community Consideration,” where multiple logo submissions were posted and discussed.[6] According to 0xb100d, the logo was never formally adopted through a structured selection process; rather, it became the default Grin logo because the community began using it organically after a developer brought attention to it.[7]
The smiley face design incorporates a subtle “G” shape in the mouth, a detail that some community members noted was not immediately obvious to casual viewers.[5] The mouth’s curl on the right side forms the letter G, complementing the M and W formed by the eyes.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s smiley face directly reflects the project’s name, “Grin,” while the M and W eyes encode the underlying Mimblewimble protocol.[3] The design also carries a playful, experimental attitude that 0xb100d described as intentional: the logo was meant to attract a niche, technically curious audience rather than mainstream users, serving as a “funny mask” for a serious privacy-focused project.[5]
Community discussions have noted that the logo’s visual impact stands out among cryptocurrency marks, with its yellow and black color scheme and distinctive MW eyes making it immediately recognizable.[3] An alternate interpretation was also floated in the community: if rotated 90 degrees, the logo spells “GRIN.”[8]
Typography and Design
Early logo proposals in the community thread referenced the Courier font, a monospaced typeface available on virtually all computers, as a deliberate choice for accessibility and simplicity.[9] One community member who created a variation of 0xb100d’s original logo used CooperBT for accompanying text, though this was a personal submission rather than an official brand decision.[10]
The official Grin website displays the wordmark “GRiN” in a stylized format, with the smiley face logo serving as the project’s primary visual identifier across the site and on exchanges.[1] The project’s theme color has been cited as #fff300 in a GitHub issue requesting the logo for a cryptocurrency icon collection.[11]
